The Guardian was founded on 5 May 1821 as the Manchester Guardian in Manchester and became one of the most influential left-liberal quality newspapers in the world. The paper was founded by publisher John Edward Taylor in the wake of the Peterloo Massacre of 1819, to advocate for liberal reform. It appeared daily and moved its headquarters to London in 1964, where it continues to appear today as The Guardian.

Voice of liberal England: Since its founding, The Guardian has stood for investigative quality journalism, progressive values and the defence of press freedom and civil rights. Among its most celebrated scoops is the publication of the Snowden documents in 2013. FAQ

Is the newspaper really an original, not a copy or reprint?

Yes, with one clearly labelled exception. At HISTORIA, you receive exclusively genuine original copies printed on the exact date you select. No scan, no reprint, no facsimile. The enclosed certificate of authenticity confirms this in writing. For a very small number of historically rare dates, such as around the end of the Second World War in 1945, we exceptionally offer copies because original issues are so scarce that we do not sell them. These editions are always explicitly labelled as copies in both the product title and the description.

Who is an old newspaper suitable for as a gift?

It is ideal for anyone celebrating a special occasion, such as a milestone birthday, wedding anniversary, retirement or graduation. A newspaper from someone's birth date or another meaningful day makes history personal and tangible. It is a memorable gift for parents, grandparents, friends or colleagues, and one that often comes as a real surprise.

Can I have the newspaper sent directly to the recipient?

Yes. During the ordering process, you can enter an alternative delivery address, including an address abroad. The newspaper will then be sent directly to the recipient, without needing to come to you first.

Does delivery take longer if I choose personalisation?

No. Personalised orders are processed directly in-house as soon as your order is received. Delivery times are not affected.

Can I order the newspaper without the folder?

Yes. The "original newspaper only" option includes the genuine old issue with certificate of authenticity and no additional packaging. The original speaks for itself.

Where does HISTORIA get so many old newspapers?

Behind our archive is a genuine collector's story. Our founder, Dr Joseph Nietfeld, is a historian and archivist who has built up a collection of more than 5 million international newspapers and magazines over almost 40 years. This has been made possible through close relationships with museums, archives, private collections and newspaper publishers.

With personalization, your gift becomes a true one-of-a-kind piece! As it’s made especially for you, we unfortunately can’t accept returns; it’s therefore excluded from the right of withdrawal.
Some old newspapers may have slight storage or usage marks. That’s perfectly normal for originals – they give your newspaper its unique character and are clear proof of authenticity.
Our 5 million newspapers and magazines are stored under ideal conditions in our own archive. Should minor damage occur, such as a tear, our experienced team will handle it carefully and professionally.
The display frame is fitted with crocodile clips. Their fine teeth hold the newspaper securely in place. Over time, slight pressure marks may appear on the paper, but they’re only visible when the newspaper is removed from the frame.
Some editions contain only a few pages, for instance when paper was scarce, while in better times they were more extensive. You always receive the complete original exactly as it was printed on its publication day.
